Biography

Formerly an editor at 'TEEN Magazine, Mary Hogan is the internationally-published, award-winning author of several popular young-adult novels. Her latest release, PRETTY FACE, is the humorous story of 16-year-old Hayley, who lives in body-obsessed Los Angeles. After she spends the summer in Italy, Hayley discovers a whole new way to view herself, her body, her life. A funny, inspirational tale of—literally—learning how to fit in. Mary's series, SUSANNA SEES STARS, tells the story of Susanna Barringer—a plucky New York City high schooler who snags a summer internship at a celebrity magazine. Susanna shows everyone how a "kid" can get the story that no one else can. This book is a teenage Devil Wears Prada, set in the celebrity world. Mary's first novel, THE SERIOUS KISS, combines humor with real-life issues to tell the story of a teenage girl's quest to be "normal" in spite of her troubled family life.

Mary's books have been published in England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Finland, and Thailand.

Mary has also published articles in several national magazines including CosmoGirl, Jane, Seventeen, Sassy, Parenting, Family Circle, First for Women, and Fitness. A member of The Writer's Guild, Mary wrote for the NBC television series, Working It Out, starring Jane Curtain and Stephen Collins, and the teenage Fox-TV pilot, Busy Signals. She also worked with talk radio personality and psychologist, Dr. Joy Browne on her relationship books, Dating for Dummies and It's a Jungle Out There, Jane...Understanding the Male Animal. Mary's own non-fiction book, STRAIGHT TALK ON CAREERS has helped countless teens decide how they might want to make a living.

Currently, Mary lives in New York City with her husband, the television actor Robert Hogan.

Event Description

Making a Living as a Writer (Grades 5–12):
A three-for-one deal, Mary offers a fun and informative look at three different ways to make a living as a writer: TV sitcoms, novels, and national magazines. Experienced in all three areas, Mary will compare and contrast the three, giving students a full-spectrum view of the writing profession. A one-day visit includes a maximum of three presentations (one of which can be a Writer’s Workshop).

How the Media Influences Body Image (Grades 5–12):
From her insider's perspective as a former magazine editor and writer, Mary will expose all the sneaky ways advertisers manipulate us into feeling bad about our bodies and ourselves. By using real ads from real magazines, Mary reveals how advertising "works" by creating a sense of inadequacy. When we feel lousy, we buy stuff to make ourselves feel better! She'll show students—boys as well as girls—how to spot what's happening in an ad so they can control the messages going into their heads. The goal: For kids to be in charge of their own body image! A one-day visit includes a maximum of three presentations (one of which can be a Writer’s Workshop).
