Biography
Peter Mandel is an adventure travel journalist and photographer the author of nine fiction and nonfiction children’s books. His titles include Say Hey! A Song of Willie Mays , a lively picture book that chronicles the incredible career of a baseball legend and that was recently selected for the Jump at the Sun Treasury of African-American Picture Books. My Ocean Liner: Across the North Atlantic on the Great Ship Normandie is a chapter book that recounts the adventures of a boy traveling from New York to France on the famous ship. Peter’s books have been included in exhibits at the Museum of Natural History in New York, the Smithsonian, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and they have been translated into Japanese, Chinese, Italian, German, Dutch, Swedish, and Danish.
Peter’s travel articles and essays have appeared in Harper’s, Reader’s Digest , and Cosmopolitan. He is also a regular contributor to the travel sections of The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and National Geographic Kids. In 2003 Peter won a Lowell Thomas Award from the Society of American Travel Writers.
Peter has presented at elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the United States, Canada, and overseas—including the American School in Paris, the International School of Luxembourg, and the International School of Stuttgart. Peter’s interactive presentations incorporate humor and fast-paced discussions with the aim of drawing out student ideas, creative input, and lots of questions. He also teaches an adult education seminar in Boston, MA, Washington, DC, and Providence, RI, called “Write Your Children’s Book (And Get It Published).”
Peter lives in Providence, RI with his wife, Kathy. He grew up in Manhattan, graduating from Middlebury College and Brown University.

How a Book Is Made
Grades 1–6
During this presentation, Peter gives students the inside scoop on the book publishing process—how books are written, illustrated, edited, printed, bound, and sold in stores. What makes a book a book, and how can students get involved in working on one?
Newspaper, Book, and Magazine Writing
Grades 4–12
Is journalism just a job? Peter talks to students about launching and pursuing a writing career and about the ways different kinds of writing (and photography) can take you places that few people have a chance to go.
Wild Adventure on White Paper
Grades 1–12
Peter talks about his experiences as a travel writer who turns adventure into text and photos. He takes students along on some of his more unusual adventures, which include kayaking in the New York Harbor, riding a Goodyear blimp, watching polar bears and penguins in the wild, playing baseball with major leaguers, and trekking through the tropical jungle.
